**BASIC FUNCTIONS:** Designs molds, dies and fixtures for production and experimental use, improving manufacturing methods and initiating design changes for cost effectiveness. **SCOPE:** Directs tool design to support production. Supports engineering and sales in product design for manufacturability. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:** * Coordinates and directs tool/gauge design and build for prototypes, production programs, and engineering changes. Monitors and maintains program tooling budgets. Monitors progress and quality of tool build both in-house and by outside sources. * Studies specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures and costs of tools. Assists in concept, design and sample building of new products. * Establishes procedures for initial set-up, maintenance and safe operation of new production tooling. Coordinates technical support of existing production tooling for purposes upgrading or repair. Determines proper and necessary tool repair and assists in required machine repair. * Quotes and directs new tool projects as necessary to increase productivity. * Acts as team leader on projects that deal with production equipment or changes in manufacturing methods with the goal being increased productivity. Participates in daily review of manufacturing problems with appropriate plant personnel. * Provides technical assistance to design engineers, program managers and customers. * Assists in the establishing and updating of process FMEA’s, control plans, job instructions, product specifications and all other information required by company’s quality system. * Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor. **CONTACTS**: * **Internal:** (16% - 30%) Moderate contacts typically occur to facilitate and promote joint action and cooperation in order to achieve immediate operating results or resolve management problems that involve controversy where practices and procedures and/or methods do not provide precise direction as to desired outcomes. * **External:** (16% - 30%) Moderately conducts regular sales, service and/or business contacts that often involve controversy where practices and procedures and/or methods do not provide precise direction as to desired outcomes. **STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS** **Education:** Bachelors Degree in scientific field. **Experience:** 5 – 10 years of tool building related experience. Additional education can be substituted for experience and vice versa. **Working** **Knowledge:** Assignments require considerable knowledge of management practice and policy interpretation or a combination of education and experience that develops technical capability to independently evaluate, select and apply techniques and standards.
